Thank you to our fabulous PTA for organising this 'eggciting' Easter egg hunt for us and the rest if the children at Finchale (not to mention our Creme Egg each.....YUM!!!).
Which thickness of biscuit is best for dunking?
In Year 5, we investigated which thickness of biscuit would be best for dunking in a hot cup of tea. We discussed how we could conduct the investigation and what controlled variables we could put in place. We also discussed and agreed as a class what measure we would use as our guide to conclude if a biscuit was the best thickness for dunking. We used 3 different biscuits to investigate and tested the biscuits twice to see if our results were consistent and revealed any patterns in data. We felt that one of our uncontrolled variables could potentially sway the data so we adjusted our test conditions before retesting for a third time. The results, overall, revealed similar results. We had enormous fun carrying out this investigation.
Reading Plus
Children in Year 5 now have access to Reading Plus. This is a scheme for reading comprehension and vocabulary that is particularly tailored for your child. Their log in details will be provided, along with a letter which explains the programme, We will be using Reading Plus on a regular basis in school and it will also be part of your child's homework each week. It would be helpful if your child could also access this at home in addition to the homework set. A video will be attached soon with useful information about the scheme.
Remembrance Day
Year 5 had a fabulous morning ( on Thursday 11th November) creating Viking Poetry with Adam Bushnell. They explored vocabulary through Viking artifacts and building troll traps. This enabled lots of rich language to be developed and channelled into producing their own poems. We thoroughly enjoyed all the activities and learning more about the Vikings....and, of course, creating our own poems! Thank you for such a fantastically fun morning, Adam.
Well done to all the Year 5 for great teamwork, engineering skills and creativity.
A HUGE thank you to Captain Chemistry for a fantastic morning (Friday 8th October) building Viking longships with us. We thoroughly enjoyed learning about them, constructing them, testing and improving them AND, most excitingly, racing them! Everyone learned so much whilst having enormous fun. Well done to all the Year 5 for great teamwork, behaviour and engineering skills.
Rose and her family recently visited the Jorvik Museum in York and bought a Viking villlage kit book......and look at how awesome it turned out! She reported that it took several hours over several weeks to build due to a stronger glue and reconstruction being needed. There are many more elements to it than can been seen in the picture.....even a Viking longship! Fabulous work Rose!
On Monday 4th October, we celebrated International Languages Day and Year 5 focus was France. Throughout the day, we enjoyed a variety of fun activities including: vocabulary wordsearches; designing rainbows whilst revising French colours; learning about various landmarks located in France; researching fascinating French facts of our own choice then designed a poster using them and even had a French disco with Mrs. Hamill. Otis completed our day perfectly with the delicious, traditional French sweet treats he baked and brought into share. FANTASTIC!!
On Wednesday 29th September, Year 5 were lucky enough to participate in a gymnastics event at Sherburn Gymnastics Centre alongside other schools. Every, single child from Finchale were absolutely awesome and did Finchale proud with their determination, resilience and behaviour. It was a real pleasure to take them and everyone enjoyed it thoroughly. Well done Year 5!!
