Year 6
Welcome to our Year 6 class page. On here, you will find out about all the fun we have and other important information.
Thank you to all of our Y6s and their families who helped to sell our beautiful Easter enterprise products at Durham Market Place on Saturday, 5th April. It was wonderful to see the result of all of the hard work that you have put in and we look forward to using the proceeds for a Y6 treat, once SATs are over. Great work, Y6!

NSPCC Number Day
In Year 6 we celebrated NSPCC Number Day in a variety of ways. We completed puzzles from nrich, solved problems from the NSPCC website and took part in a TTRockstars competition. Out of 19,016 classes, Year 6 placed 631st, which is a great achievement.

Painting and Mixed Media: Artist Study
As part of our art unit, we have studied the works of various artists including David Hockney, Paula Rego, John Singer Sargent, Fiona Rae and Labaina Himid. At the end of our unit, we then produced a piece of art to represent us in the style of our favourite artist. We also produced a plaque for our piece of art.
Enterprise Week 1
Our Year 6 pupils have been invited to take part in an enterprise challenge alongside nine other school in County Durham. The aim of this is to inspire confidence, creativity, and entrepreneurship through a variety of activities. This includes being introduced to business concepts such as idea generation, product development and marketing. By the end of the ten weeks, pupils will have the opportunity to sell their products at a dedicated market day in April (details for this will be confirmed).
During their first week, pupils have looked at what makes a business and how a product meets a customer's needs.
Hand Buzzer Game
As part of their DT work, Year 6 have designed, created and evaluated their own hand buzzer games. They have developed a game to use their fine motor skills. They had to consider function over form by ensuring that their product was fit for purpose and attractive for their designated audience. Please see below for their work and final designs.
Woodland Protectors
As part of their work in geography, Year 6 have studied how to protect our forests. They were given a spending limit of £60,000 and worked in groups to produce a spending list and a presentation to explain why they had made the decisions they had. As each group shared their decisions, the rest of the class made notes on the key messages for each group. At the end, they voted for their winners.

Christmas Card Winner!
We were thrilled to hear that a member of our class had won the Northumbrian Water Christmas card competition. This design will now be printed on all of their cards and sent out around the region.
World War 2 with Adam Bushnell
Year 6 had a fabulous session with Adam Bushnell. They learned about the smells and sounds associated with the Blitz. After this, they produced a piece of writing about waking up to the aftermath of a night of bombing where they included the five senses.
Meet our Lovely Librarians
Here are our Year 6 librarians. They will take it in turns to help in the library during the week. It is wonderful to see so many of them being interested in helping in our library.
Primary Maths Challenge
We took part in the Primary Maths Challenge and although it was challenging (which we do like in maths in Year 6!) we did enjoy it as it was the chance to take part in something different in mathematics. We are hopeful that some of us will have the opportunity to take part in the bonus round in February.
Remembrance Service
Our school community game together to remember those who gave their lives, so we could live ours. Our Year 6 pupils have been looking at the poem, 'In Flanders Fields' and as part of their work, they have considered how the poem makes them feel and what it makes them picture. They then created their own poem within the poem using 'Blackout Poetry'. From this, they created their own imagery poetry based on their poem. Year 6 then shared their work as part of our Remembrance Service.
Judo
We have been fortunate to have had a Judo session to find out about the sport and we could join a club, should we wish. During the session, we learned new skills and worked together.
Science Circuits
In Science, our current topic is 'Electricity'. We have been investigating complete and incomplete circuits. Next, we are going to investigate what happens when more components are added to a circuitg.
Reciting Poetry
In Year 6, we have been looking at The Highwayman by Alfred Noyes. This is a narrative poem set in the 18th Century and written in 1904. As part of our work, we produced a diary entry as Tim the Ostler and created our own alternative ending to the poem. We had to consider the rhyming pattern, the metre of the poem and the vocabulary we used. We then shared our alternative versions with our class.
Classifying Animals in Science
As part of our science work, we created our own classification keys. We had to think like scientists to create the questions to help identify each animal.
Colour Run
We all had a fabulous time taking part in the Colour Run. We certainly were awash with colour by the end of the run!
Art Week
For Art Week in Year 6, we looked at pointillism and created a painting of a bowl of fruit using the work of Yayoi Kasuma as inspiration. We were so impressed by how well our artwork turned out (Mrs Sleeman was most certainly impressed!).
