Autumn Term 2015
Welcome to Year 6. This term we are going to be finding all about what life was like for children during World War II and will be reading the novel 'Goodnight Mister Tom' as part of our English.
A huge thank you to Ms Arnell, Mrs Blackett, Mrs Rice and Kobe's mum for helping - we couldn't have done it without you!
To raise money we dressed up as 'Superheroes' for Children in Need. Our Year 6 S.W.A.G. team led a whole school assembly and then in the afternoon we did lots of fun activities.
Year 6 have been learning about World War II as part of their topic work this term. They were asked to design Remembrance Day posters for homework and as you can see have produced some lovely work which is now on display in the hall.
A huge 'CONGRATULATIONS' to Finn who has just achieved his black belt in Taekwondo at the age of 10! We are so proud of you!
World War II Workshop at the D.L.I.
Year 6 had a brilliant trip out to the D.L.I. Museum, finding out about life during WW II for both soldiers and civilians. They were shown around the museum by Naomi, looking at who the Durham Light Infantry were and their role in both WW I and II. Then they had the chance to handle real-life artefacts learning about the different jobs and roles that people had for example, ARP wardens, Women's Land Army as well as the different campaigns that all helped the war effort. After lunch the class had a chance to reflect on what they had learned from their visit and created their own art work and poems.
I was so impressed by everyone in Year 6, they were polite, asked good questions and were a real credit to our school - well done!
Year 6 imagined they worked for the 'Bespoke Gas Mask Company' and have designed and created gas masks as requested by our clients.
Year 6 were very lucky to have our school governor, Mrs Hamill, (also secondary school French teacher) come in and teach us some french. We learned how to order a drink from a french cafe and sang a song about planting cauliflowers.
Working in pairs, Year 6 are creating their own multimedia presentation on a particular aspect of World War II for example: protection, aircraft, rationing. They will be presenting them to the rest of the class before half term.
Mr Beveridge, a PE teacher from Framwellgate School, is going to be teaching Year 6 gymnastics this term.
