Spring Term

This Spring term our topic in Year 2 is the Great Fire of London.

We will be learning about why the fire started, how long it lasted, the roles of important figures in 1666 and comparing fire safety then and now.

Great Fire of London Silhouettes

In Art, Year 2 created Great Fire of London Silhouettes using a range of materials. We spent lots of time looking at images by artists and using them as inspiration to design our own.

We loved doing this and were really happy with the final results.

Baking

The Great Fire of London started in a bakery on Pudding Lane. Bakery's produce lots of different types of food such as bread, pastries and cakes.

In year 2 we decided to do some baking of our own, using a recipe from the 1600's to help us, just like they would have used in the Great Fire of London period.

Judo

We love it each year when we get the chance to try our hand at Judo and this year was no exception! The children had an excellent time and were enthused by the session!

Animals including Humans

In Science we have been looking at Animals including humans.

We looked at images and words of animals when they were young and when they have grown up. We then worked together to match them up correctly.

Dance Festival

Year 2 were very lucky to take part in this years dance festival at the Gala Theatre.

Year 2 (otherwise known as the ''Together Gang'') were winners of the Most Energetic Routine this year, when they performed their High School Musical dance to ''We're All In This Together''.

The children performed fantastically and we were really proud of them.

Well done Year 2!

Investigating Waterproof Materials

In Science we have also been looking at different materials.

We decided to investigate if different types of materials are waterproof such as, cardboard, kitchen roll, tissue paper etc.

We very carefully planned our investigation thinking about how we could make it a fair test. The children then worked together to investigate if the materials were waterproof and when we were finished we shared our findings with each other.

Autumn Term

This Autumn term we are going to be finding all about the Tudors discovering: who the Tudors were, their significant role in British history and what life was like in the Tudor period.

It's such a fantastic topic so I am very excited to get started!

The Tudor Rose

In Year 2 we have been learning all about the significance of the Tudor Rose. The children discovered that the Tudor rose was created by Henry VII when he married Elizabeth of York therefore combining the Lancaster and York rose to create the Tudor rose.

Year 2 created their own Tudor rose using a range of coloured card and demonstrating their excellent cutting skills. After this the children then used a range of collage materials to produce beautiful Stained Glass windows with the Tudor rose as the centrepiece.

This was a really enjoyable task and the final products were fantastic.

Hoopstarz

We were very lucky to get the chance to have a session with Tracey from Hoopstarz. We learned lots of new skills with our hoops. 

It was great fun!

Multi-Skills & Fantastic Leadership Skills!

Year 2 spent a great day at New College undertaking a carousel of sports activities focused on Multi-skills. We honed our throwing, jumping  dribbling, balancing  and other sports skills. We had a fantastic time and really enjoyed the well organised sports event!

Very well done to Year 2, you worked really well and were great ambassadors for our school.

 

They were helped by our new School Sports Organising Crew who acted as Sports Leaders for the event. Jen from the School Sports contacted school specifically to say how well they had done showing exceptional leadership skills.

 

Year 6 Sports Leaders are: Taylor, Lewis, Jessica and Madison. Year 5 Sports Leaders are: Amelia, Jessica, Ethan and Cain.

Where the Wild Things Are

In English, Year 2 have been reading the excellent story Where the Wild Things Are.

The Story focuses on a young boy named Max who, after dressing in his wolf costume, wreaks such havoc through his household that he is sent to bed without his supper. Max's bedroom undergoes a mysterious transformation into a jungle environment, and he winds up sailing to an island inhabited by malicious beasts known as the "Wild Things." After successfully intimidating the creatures, Max is hailed as the king of the Wild Things and enjoys a rumpus with his subjects. However, he starts to feel lonely and decides to return home, to the Wild Things' dismay. Upon returning to his bedroom, Max discovers a hot supper waiting for him.

 

We loved the story so much that we decided to use it as the focus in class for our writing. We used shoeboxes and a wide range of materials to recreate the story settings. We then imagined that we had 'stepped inside' our settings using our senses to help us develop our descriptive writing. We thought of descriptive noun and extended noun phrases to describe what it as like to see, touch, smell and hear. After this, we then produced some fantastic sensory descriptions about our settings and we also used our boxes to help us recount and retell the story.

Designing and Creating Tudor Houses

As part of our Topic on the Tudors, Year 2 have been looking at and investigating Tudor houses. In Design and Technology, we sketched designs of our houses, then used a range of materials such as, paint, cereal boxes, card, straw etc to create them.

Year 2 really enjoyed this task and were thrilled with the final pieces!

Christmas Journey

Year 2 were very lucky to be invited to All Saints church to experience the story of the Christmas Journey.

Tudor Day

What a brilliant day we had when Ross came in from the Fulling Mill & Oriental Museum to host a Tudor day. We spent the morning exploring a timeline of British History, dressing up in Tudor costumes, looking at and handling Tudor artefacts and we wrote our own inventory using a quill and ink. In the afternoon we performed a Tudor dance for Queen Elizabeth 1 and we learned all about Tudor portraits and their hidden meanings. We also performed a brilliant play about the religious struggles that took place in Tudor times. We had so much fun dressed up in our costumes! We didn’t want the day to end!

KS1 Christmas production
'Lights, Camel, Action'

KS1 were outstanding in their Nativity with a twist performance of 'Lights, Camel Action'. 

I am so proud of everyone you were all amazing!

Adam Bushnell

Year 2 were very lucky to be visited by the author Adam Bushnell. He inspired us to write time travelling stories about a hunting trip in Tudor times which resulted in a final meeting with Henry VIII!

The children loved this session and you could really see how inspired they were to write very imaginatively.

Thanks Adam and we hope you come and visit us again soon!
