Thank you for all the lovely Christmas presents and cards you have given me. Merry Christmas and a Happy New Year to you all! Miss Hall x

Durham Cathedral Trip

Year 2 visited Durham Cathedral as part of their studies on St. Cuthbert. The children got to dress up and have a procession around the cathedral. They also listened to stories about St. Cuthbert such as St. Cuthbert and the Raven and then took part in a wide range of activities based on these stories. Year 2 had a fantastic time and behaved exceptionally well. Joan, one of the   Cathedral Volunteers commented, “What a lovely class of children, and they are so well behaved.” In addition, fellow passengers on their bus also commented on their exemplary behaviour and manners. Well done to Year 2 for being such superb ambassadors for our school.

Little Shop of Horrors

Year 2 were very lucky to have a visit from some Year 10 and 11 pupils from Framwellgate Comprehensive school who were preparing to perform a production of Little Shop of Horrors. For this production the cast needed lots and lots of flowers as art of their staging and so Year 2 were very happy to oblige. We had a lovely afternoon working with the pupils to create a range of flowers using tissue and pipe cleaners.

The Great Fire of London
Silhouette Art work

Year 2 have been exploring art work by a range of artists on the Great Fire of London. We looked at the techniques and colours used to convey the huge fire and the Tudor buildings at the time. We particularly liked the silhouette art work and decided we would create our own versions of the Great Fire of London. The children used a range of pastels to create flames and the dramatic skyline. Then the tricky part, using black card year 2 then created the outline of the Tudor houses and buildings in the skyline, for example, St. Pauls Cathedral.

Take a look at the children's fantastic artwork, you can really see how hard all the children worked!!!

The Great Fire of London
Samuel Pepys diary

As part of our Great Fire of London topic Year 2 have been exploring Samuel Pepys diary. We looked at the dramatic events retold by Pepys in his diary entries which helped us to understand what it was like at the time of the fire and the changes that took place in London. Year 2 really enjoyed learning about Samuel Pepys and his role in the events that unfolded so much that they acted out some key moments from his diary entries. We had great fun performing and we created freeze frames from the drama helping us to use speech bubbles correctly.
Well done Year 2!

Mathematics 2D and 3D shapes

Year 2 have been looking at the properties of 3D shapes in Mathematics. Some of the children took part in a maths investigation in which they explored the properties of 3D shapes. The children had to follow and solve a riddle to create a 3D shape such as a cuboid. Year 2 also compared these shapes to everyday 3D shapes that we see all around us.

As we were learning to be actors in our Nativity Play, we thought it would be useful to see adults acting out the story at our local church. We got to dress up as shepherds and we saw a puppet show. Everyone was lovely and we even had the chance to make puppets of the main characters of he Nativity! Thank you very much to all concerned who made it a great morning to remember!

Tudor Houses

In D&T, as part of our topic on The Tudors, Year 2 made Tudor Houses. We looked carefully at Tudor houses using a range of books and websites. We then worked in groups to design and create Tudor houses with a range of materials such as cardboard boxes, paint, straw, card etc.
First we attached two different sized boxes together and folded and cut cardboard to create a roof. Then we used white materials to cover the boxes.

Children in Need Day

We have been raising lots of money for Children in Need by having a non-uniform day. Everyone was asked to donate £1 to either come dressed as a superhero or in something spotty. The girls in Year 6  that are in S.W.A.G. (School Worldwide Awareness Group) led an assembly and then provided resources and activities for everyone to do in their family groups.

Tudor Day

What a brilliant day we had when John and his team came in from the Fulling Mill & Oriental Museum to host a Tudor day. We spent the morning looking at and handling Tudor artefacts and we wrote our own inventory using a quill and ink.  In the afternoon we performed a Tudor dance for Queen Elizabeth 1 and we learned all about heraldry creating some fantastic coats of arms. We also performed a brilliant play about the religious struggles that took place in Tudor times. We had so much fun dressed up in our costumes! We didn’t want the day to end!

Year 2 were very lucky to have a visit from the Fire Brigade. We had a firefighter come into class to discuss the importance of fire safety, particularly in the run up to Bonfire Night!
We learned about the fire safety equipment worn by firefighters and we went outside to look at the fire engine.

Year 2 were very excited and had lots of inquisitive questions to ask. We then sat in the fire engine and we all had a go at using the hose!

The Tudors!

As part of our work on 'The Tudors', Year 2 have been looking at the Tudor family tree and the significance of the Tudor Rose. We discovered that the first Tudor king was Henry VII and he married Elizabeth of York. These were the parents of Henry VIII.
Year 2 learned that the house of York was represented by a white rose and the house of Lancaster was represented by a red rose. Henry VII combined the two roses to create the Tudor Rose.

Year 2 created our own Tudor Roses using a variety of materials demonstrating our cutting and sticking skills. We then used the Tudor Rose as the centrepiece to create some beautiful Tudor Stained Glass Windows. Year 2 loved this creative art lesson and demonstrated some excellent collage skills!
