Our Link with Unidade 2 School Maputo, Mozambique

Miss Johnstone and Mrs Whitton were fortunate enough to visit out partner school Unidade 2 in Maputo, Mozambique during the half term holiday, February 2018. The school has over 1000 pupils aged between 9 and 16 years and although most of their lessons are in Portuguese, their national language, pupils also learn English. Everyone made us very welcome and we watched a variety of lessons including PE which pupils do outside in bare feet; agriculture , where pupils learn how to grow things in their challenging soil; physics; performance poetry; art; music and of course English. We were also invited to teach pupils about road safety as the school is situated on the bend of a main road and there have been many accidents there involving pupils. Schools in Maputo have not taught about road safety before and so our main project is to help them develop a road safety programme. At the end of the week we presented our work at a conference with officials from the British Council, who fund this partnership, teachers from both Maputo and the UK, as well as representatives from the British High Commission in Mozambique. We have learned so much from our visit to Unidade 2 and as well as continuing to develop road safety, we will be looking at re-cycling and how to reduce waste, specifically the use of plastic in school.
